Mapping scenes from a creative life

After taking on a project to rebuild the ArtCenter Alumni Portal, ArtCenter asked Brand Knew to help with editing and publishing Storyboard interviews.

Storyboards are conducted with ArtCenter alums, faculty and friends to express how their relationship with the school has helped shape their identity, world view and the meaning of their lives. Each piece is written in a first person singular narrative.

Deconstructing the Mythological

Unlike a lot of ArtCenter grads, I never had a mentor. There was no guru figure teaching me to be the best version of myself.

So, I proceeded to mine for inspiration straight from the source.

How empathy and curiosity forged my path to design

I’ve always maintained that design isn’t just a practice. It’s a way of looking at the world.

The designer’s mindset is one that will lead you down a singular path. Part of the journey is rooted in a kind of insatiable curiosity, in addition to an ongoing personal desire to improve the world you inhabit. A designer is always asking how things can be made better or more unique.

A lot of ArtCenter graduates recall being “blown away” by the gallery work when they first take a tour of the school. My experience was no different. I found the quality of the work on display to be intimidating. To put it plainly, I was terrified.

From the woodshop to the 3D lab: My journey as a maker

“My job as a creative is to keep up with technology as it changes. I always wanted to be ahead of the wave. The problems we face remain the same. It’s our means of solving problems that have changed.”

I’ve been a maker for as long as I can remember.
